Rust IoT Telemetry Pipeline: Real-Time Sensor Data Processing for Manufacturing
This project is an end-to-end Rust IoT telemetry pipeline for an Industrial IoT manufacturer. It uses a lightweight edge agent, a streaming backbone, and a cloud-side processor to deliver real-time sensor data processing at the scale of millions of events per minute. The result is an edge-to-cloud architecture that detects faults in seconds, never loses data during outages, and scales without a matching rise in infrastructure cost. Our Rust development services and IoT development expertise shaped every layer of the build. Our Rust payment processing case study shows the same engineering approach in financial services. This build also draws on our data engineering services and application and system integration services.

Outcomes
Outcomes
The Rust-based pipeline handled significantly more events per minute than the prior system
Real-time stream processing cut anomaly detection time from minutes to seconds
Local buffering and replay eliminated data loss during short network drops
Rust's efficiency lets the agent run on existing gateway hardware without upgrades
Business Challenges
High-Volume Sensor Data
Root Cause: Thousands of factory-floor sensors streamed readings every few seconds
Business Impact: The existing ingestion layer couldn't keep up during peak production hours
Real-Time Alerting Requirements
Root Cause: Equipment faults needed detection within seconds, not minutes
Business Impact: Delayed anomaly detection risked equipment damage and unplanned downtime
Resource-Constrained Edge Devices
Root Cause: Some processing needed to happen on-site with limited CPU and memory
Business Impact: A heavyweight runtime wasn't viable on the edge hardware in use
Data Loss During Network Drops
Root Cause: Factory floor connectivity occasionally dropped for short periods
Business Impact: Sensor readings during outages were previously lost rather than buffered
Growing Sensor Fleet
Root Cause: The number of connected sensors was expected to grow significantly
Business Impact: The pipeline needed to scale without a proportional increase in infrastructure cost
Solution Approach
Rust for Edge and Cloud Consistency
What We Did: Used Rust for both the edge ingestion agent and the cloud-side stream processor
Why It Matters: The same memory-safe, low-overhead runtime works efficiently on constrained edge hardware and in the cloud
Streaming-First Architecture
What We Built the pipeline around a message-streaming backbone rather than batch ingestion
Why It Matters: Anomalies are detected and alerted on within seconds of a reading arriving
Local Buffering with Guaranteed Delivery
What We Did: Edge agents buffer readings locally and replay them once connectivity returns
Why It Matters: No sensor data is lost during short network interruptions
Use Cases Delivered
Real-Time Stream Processor - Processes incoming telemetry and evaluates alert conditions in real time
Local Buffering & Replay - Buffers readings during network outages and replays them once reconnected
Anomaly Detection Rules Engine - Evaluates sensor readings against configurable thresholds and patterns
Live Monitoring Dashboard - Real-time visualisation of sensor status across the factory floor
Historical Data Export - Aggregates and exports telemetry history for long-term analysis

Frequently Asked Questions About Rust Real-Time Telemetry Processing
Rust combines low memory use and predictable latency with compile-time memory safety. That lets the same language run on resource-constrained edge gateways and in cloud stream processing, which keeps the codebase consistent and easier to maintain.
Edge agents use store-and-forward buffering. Readings are held locally during a connectivity drop and replayed once the network returns, which eliminated data loss during short outages.
Real-time stream processing evaluates readings as they arrive, cutting anomaly detection time from minutes to seconds. Alerts come from a configurable rules engine of thresholds and patterns.
Yes. Rust's low overhead let the agent run on the gateways already on the factory floor, so no hardware upgrades were needed.
It provides the foundation. Earlier fault detection lets maintenance teams intervene before failures escalate, and historical telemetry export feeds long-term analysis. For deeper analytics on that data, see our data analytics consulting services.
